Peter Rowan Information
Peter Rowan (July 4. 1942) is an American composer, singer, and bluegrass musician born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was interested in music from an early age, and as such, Rowan learned guitar from his uncle. In 1956, Rowan performed in the rockabilly band called the Cupbids. He was influenced musically by Eric Von Schmidt, a blues musician.
Rowan switched from an electric guitar to an acoustic one and began playing the blues. He discovered bluegrass in college after hearing The Stanley Brothers and The Country Gentlemen. Later on, he found the music of Bill Monroe. As a bluegrass boy, he made his recording debut on October 14, 1966. The next year, he teamed up with David Grisman and formed the band Earth Opera that used to open for The Doors often. Rowan also joined Seatrain in 1969 with Richard Greene. Along with Clarence White, he, Bill Keith, Greene, and Grisman, formed another bluegrass band entitled Muleskinner.
In 1973, Rowan and Grisman formed a new group with John Kahn, Jerry Garcia, and Green entitled “Old & in the Way.” Rowan has signed with many record labels so far, such as Omnivore Records, Compass Records, Sugar Hill Records, Flying Fish Records, and Rounder Records. Some of the notable solo albums he released throughout his career include Peter Rowan (1978), Medicine Trail (1980), Peter Rowan & the Wild Stallions (1981), The Walls of Time (1982), The First Whippoorwill (1985), Dust Bowl Children (1990), and All on a Rising Day (1991).
