Pert Near Sandstone is an American bluegrass-newgrass band from St. Paul, Minnesota. It is a member of the Minnesota Roots Music scene, including Charlie Parr, Trampled By Turtles, and 4onthefloor. Since 2004, Pert Near Sandstone has released six full-length albums and has performed extensively throughout the United States. Ryan Young, a former full-time member (and now collaborator) with Trampled By Turtles, plays fiddle.
According to Dave Simonett, Pert Near Sandstone is one of Trampled By Turtles' favorite modern bluegrass performers in the United States. Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury, Steve Martin, and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Wilco, and Yonder Mountain Stringband are just a few renowned musicians who have shared the stage with Pert Near Sandstone.
"Pert Near Sandstone" and "Trampled By Turtles" were singled out as examples of awful Minnesota band names in a May 27, 2012, opinion post in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. They took first place in the Band Competition at the Yonder Mountain String Band's Northwest String Summit in North Plains, Oregon, in 2010. The local and national press, including the Minneapolis Star Tribune and others, praised the "Paradise Hop" album released in 2011.
