Patrick Landeza Information
Patrick Landeza is a Hawaiian contemporary slack key guitarist. As early as 19, Landeza was serving as the opening act for Hawaiian music legends such as Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Cecilio & Kapono, Keali'i Reichel, and HAPA in the San Francisco Bay Area. About this time, he met George Winston, a composer, musician, and fan of Hawaiian music. Winston started Dancing Cat Records. The record company was instrumental in bringing slack key guitar to the attention of music fans worldwide.
Winston was a big fan of young guitarist Patrick Landeza's and invited him to listen to sessions by Slack key greats. Sonny Chillingworth (who was good friends with Landeza's grandparents on Molokai), Cyril Pahinui, Martin Pahinui, George Kuo, Pekelo Cosma, and Dennis Kamakahi were some of the first renowned slack key guitarists to teach and mentor Landeza. Landeza founded the Institute of Hawaiian Music and Culture in 2004 as a mobile workshop teaching Hawaiian music and culture (including slack key guitar and ukulele) and the Hawaiian language.
Some musical educators were Herb Ohta Jr., Keoki Kahumoku, Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, David Kamakahi, and Keoki Kahumoku. Since 2004, when he launched the DVD "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Made Easy" (Lamb Productions), Landeza has been actively involved as a Slack key teacher. He has held workshops at the FAR-West Folk Alliance conference, the Healdsburg Guitar Festival, and the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina. The articles he wrote about teaching guitar were included in Acoustic Guitar.
