Orpheus in the Underworld Information
Orphée aux enfers is a humorous opera composed by Jacques Offenbach with librettos written by Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy. Other English titles for the opera include Orpheus in the Underworld and Orpheus in Hell. It premiered on 21 October 1858 as a two-act "opéra bouffon" at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris, and on 7 February 1874, the work received a major overhaul and expansion into the four-act "opéra féerie" it is known as today.
This opera makes fun of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Instead of being Apollo's son, Orpheus is a simple violin instructor in this retelling. When his wife Eurydice is taken by Pluto, god of the underworld, he is finally relieved to be rid of her. A groundswell of public opinion finally convinces Orpheus to go looking for Eurydice. It was commonly believed that the opera's depiction of the gods of Olympus engaging in abominable behavior was a thinly veiled mockery of Napoleon III's court and government in France. Some reviewers were outraged by the composer's parody of Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice and the librettists' treatment of classical mythology; others were quite enthusiastic.
Offenbach's first opera of significant length was Orphée aux enfers. Offenbach and his Bouffes business were saved from financial ruin thanks to the success of the initial 1858 production, which extended into the next year. The 1874 rebirth of the Gaîté was a financial success. The composer lived to see his work frequently performed in France and worldwide throughout the 20th century. It has been one of his most often performed operas and is still getting new productions in the 21st century.
