Oh Susanna Information
Suzanne Elizabeth Ungerleider is an American Canadian alternative country singer and songwriter. She was born in Northampton, Massachusetts. She professionally performs under the stage name of Oh Susanna. Oh Susanna's debut performance was in July 1995 at Vancouver's Railway Club, and the band's self-titled 7-song EP was published the following year independently. After going to the Stardust Picnic event by Blue Rodeo, she decided to move there around this time.
As part of the "Scrappy Bitch Tour," she and fellow musicians Veda Hille and Kinnie Starr traveled North America in 1999 in support of her debut studio album, Johnstown. The song "River Blue," from the film The Fishing Trip, earned her the Genie Award for Best Original Song at the 19th annual Genie Awards in 1999. Since 2001's Sleepy Little Sailor, she has produced seven more albums: 2003's Oh Susanna, 2007's Short Stories, 2011's Soon the Birds, 2014's Namedropper, 2017's A Girl in Teen City, and 2018's Decemberly, a Holiday EP with Michael Johnston.
Luke Doucet, Burke Carroll, Bazil Donovan, Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, Justin Rutledge, Ruth Moody of The Wailin' Jennys, and some members of Weeping Tile have all appeared on her albums as guests. Ungerleider has said, "A lot of that stuff comes from other people who have told me things," about where she finds inspiration for her songs. Much of it is completely fabricated. She further claims that her childhood in Western Canada has influenced some of her songwriting.
