In remembrance of the pioneers who came to Ogden, Utah, the city hosts Pioneer Days annually. Among the many July events is the Ogden Pioneer Days rodeo, named by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) among the best outdoor rodeos in the country year after year. Nearly thirty thousand people show up to the rodeo annually.
Ogden Pioneer Days was organized in 1934 to celebrate Ogden's early days and, more significantly, to help ensure the city's uncertain future. Ogden was not immune to the Great Depression's devastating effects on the United States. There was a lot of upheaval, but Mayor Harman Peery devised a strategy to use the rich cattle ranchers' rodeo interests to bring in tourists and improve the spirits of the struggling town.
Peery set lofty goals for the Western-themed festival. Over the years, entertainers like Abbott and Costello—a comedy duo—were invited, but only Abbott and Costello showed up. Other notable attendees included Franklin D. Roosevelt. Indeed, Ogden Pioneer Days has accomplished all that Peery intended and more since the celebration has grown into a nationally acclaimed event.
