North Carolina Master Chorale Information
The North Carolina Master Chorale was founded in 1942 as the Raleigh Oratorio Society; it is dedicated to delivering the best in choral music performance to audiences in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Since 1993, Dr. Alfred E. Sturgis has led the Chorale, including a 170-voice Symphonic Chorus and a smaller, professional Chamber Choir whose size changes depending on the project.
The Chorale, hailed by critics as Raleigh's premier choral ensemble, specializes in choral masterworks with orchestra. The NCMC Chamber Choir debuted in 1996-97 and performed compositions ranging from Renaissance to modern styles. Singers in both ensembles are chosen via audition from around Wake and nearby counties, with many of them being professional singers, conductors, and music educators.
Ray's Gospel Mass, Rachmaninoff's Vespers, Haydn's The Creation, and Berlioz's Requiem have been performed by the Chorale in recent seasons. The Symphonic Choir has collaborated with the North Carolina Symphony on Britten's War Requiem, Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, and the Carolina Ballet on Orff's Carmina Burana and Handel's Messiah.
Each year, members of the Chamber Choir and Music Director Sturgis present the educational program Choral Music Through the Ages to students in public schools. The Master Chorale performs a holiday production, Joy of the Season, in Meymandi Event Hall each season and a Valentine's Day concert, Romance in the Air, at William Peace University.
