Nick Murphy (Chet Faker) Information
Nicholas James Murphy (June 23, 1988) is an Australian singer and songwriter who is professionally known as Chet Faker. In 2012, Murphy released an EP entitled Thinking in Textures under his professional name. He then signed to Downtown Records in the US.
For a long, Murphy was misjudged for being the popular established musician, Nick Murphy. Due to this, he started playing under his professional name to prove his identity. His settlement on this name was a homage to Chet Baker. Some of his other notable influences include Bob Dylan and his father's "chilled out Ibiza CDs" and his mother's Motown albums.
Murphy started garnering fame after releasing a cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity'' that went viral online. The cover hit number one in May 2011 on the Hype Machine chart. The first EP by Murphy came out in March 2012 entitled Thinking in Textures. The release earned positive reviews. The second song of this EP, named "I'm Into You," warned of major popularity among fans. It ended up landing at number 24 on Triple J's Hottest 100 in 2012.
Murphy also collaborated with MS MR and Flume. He was also one of the featured vocalists on "Fool of Me" by Say Lou Lou. The track was named Best New Track by Pitchfork in 2013.
Murphy won Breakthrough Artist of the Year in October 2012. He also won Best Independent Single/EP for Thinking in Textures at the Australian Independent Records Awards. He also earned the Best Independent Release at the Rolling Stone Australia Awards for 2012.
