Nick Mulvey Information
Nick Mulvey (November 4, 1984) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born in England. Mulvey attended both Chesterton Community College and Long Road Sixth Form College during his formative years in Cambridge. His interest in music and art led him to Havana, Cuba when he was 19. When Mulvey returned to the UK, he decided to study Ethnomusicology at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies. Mulvey met the other members of the Portico Quartet while they were all pursuing degrees in ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies.
Duncan Bellamy (drums), Jack Wyllie (soprano and tenor saxophones), and Milo Fitzpatrick (double bass) were all friends from Cambridge who formed the band. Along with Radiohead, Elbow, and Adele, their debut album Knee-deep in the North Sea was a finalist for the 2008 Mercury Prize. The last lyrics of Alt-J's song "Dissolve Me" reveal the album's title. Portico Quartet's second album, Isla, was released on Real World Records on October 9, 2009.
In 2011, Mulvey decided to pursue a solo music career, and he quit the band Portico Quartet. Even though his critics have out a shift in his technique, Mulvey insists that his music has always sounded the same. In November 2012, Mulvey published his debut EP, The Trellis, and in July 2013, he released his second EP, Fever to the Form. He performed in symphony halls around the UK on a tour with Laura Marling in the fall of 2013, and he credits Marling as a major influence on his work.
