New Mexico Philharmonic Information
New Mexico Philharmonic was founded in 1932 by the members of the Albuquerque Rotary Club. Grace Thompson Edmister was asked to form the Symphony Civic Orchestra by the Rotarians. This made her the first woman in the United States to conduct such an ensemble. For the inaugural event of the ensemble, the instruments, sheet music, and a concert location was offered by The University of New Mexico. Around 2,000 people attended the event, at the end of which, Rotary Club International President named Clinton P. Anderson officially presented the orchestra to the City of Albuquerque. The orchestra was accepted by Mayor Tingley, on behalf of the citizens of Albuquerque.
The current music director of the philharmonic is Grammy Award Winning conductor Roberto Minczuk. He was appointed in 2017 as the Music Director of the New Mexico Philharmonic. The board of directors includes Maureen Baca - President, Anthony Trujillo - Vice President, David Peterson - Secretary, and Kory Hoggan as Treasurer. Some of the principal musicians that play in New Mexico Philharmonic are Anthony Templeton on second violin, Laura Chang on viola, Joan Zucker on cello, Jean-Luc Matton on bass, Valerie Potter on flute, Kevin Vigneau on oboe, Marianne Shifrin on clarinet, Stefanie Przybylska on bassoon, Peter Erb on the horn, and John Marchiando on trumpet.
