New Century Chamber Orchestra Information
Miriam Perkoff, a cellist, and Wieslaw Pogorzelski, a violist, created the New Century Chamber Orchestra in 1992. The founders wanted to bring classical music to the San Francisco Bay Area in a new and exciting way. As part of a conductorless orchestra, the music director selects the programming, guides the artistic direction, and leads the orchestra's seventeen members. Musical decisions are made collectively to boost the players' level of dedication and the precision, passion, and power of their playing.
From 1992 through 1999, Stuart Canin was New Century's first Music Director. Canin is presently the Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera under Music Director James Conlon and General Director Plácido Domingo. He formerly served as the San Francisco Symphony Concertmaster and the San Francisco Opera.
New Century commissions new works, revives neglected works from the past and incorporates pieces from various genres such as jazz and rock into the chamber orchestra setting, in addition to performing classic chamber orchestra repertory. The New Century Chamber Orchestra aims to offer great chamber orchestra concerts to Bay Area audiences. They perform in small spaces in Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and San Rafael.
