Nell Marie McKay (April 13, 1982) is an English singer and songwriter. She was born in London, England. The country she was born in and the country she currently resides in are both hers. She spent her formative years in Harlem, New York, Olympia, Washington, and Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, with her mother. She attended the Manhattan School of Music and majored in jazz voice, but she never finished. The record labels noticed her after she performed at the Sidewalk Cafe and Joe's Pub, which are located in New York City.
McKay's first studio album, Get Away from Me, was produced by Geoff Emerick and recorded in August 2003. The Beatles' albums Revolver and Abbey Road both use Emerick's engineering. Nods to Norah Jones's hit song "Come Away with Me" in the title.
The album Get Away from Me came out in February of 2004. The album was hailed as "a tour de force from a smart, intelligent performer who sounds comfortable in any age" by New York Times critic Jon Pareles. Several "Best of 2004" lists featured the album. McKay was a significant success story at the 2004 SXSW Festival and a top contender for the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize. In July 2004, she supported Alanis Morissette and the Barenaked Ladies on the first leg of their Au Naturale tour, which took them across the northern United States.
