Napalm Death is a grindcore band from Meriden, West Midlands, England, established in 1981. Since their debut in 1986, the band has been comprised of a rotating cast of performers. Still, since their 1992 album Utopia Banished, the core four members—bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris, drummer Danny Herrera, and lead vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway—have stayed unchanged. Napalm Death was a five-piece band from 1989 to 2004 after replacing Bill Steer on guitar with Jesse Pintado.
With Pintado's departure, the band is once again a quartet. Their noise-filled sound combines crust punk and death metal elements like fast tempos, blast beats, distorted guitars, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdrive bass, incomprehensible growls or high-pitched shrieks for vocals, extremely brief songs, and socially conscious lyrics.
Scum, the band's 1987 debut album on Earache Records, had a major impact on the metal scene worldwide. Their song "You Suffer" has the lowest runtime of any music recorded at 1.316 seconds, per Guinness World Records. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Napalm Death is the ninth best-selling death metal band in the United States despite having only produced sixteen studio albums.
