Morgan James (November 24, 1981) is an American actress, singer, and songwriter. She is from Boise, Idaho, and daughter of educators and actors Allen Grunerud and Shellie Harwood. She moved with her family frequently from Pocatello, Idaho to Utah, Tennessee, and finally to Modesto, California. James developed an interest in performing arts by getting inspired by her actor parents. She joined a choir while in middle school. Until James went to college, her grandmother brought her a karaoke machine and agreed to pay for singing lessons. She attended the high school at Peter Johansen High School in Modesto, where she graduated in 1999. She also studied opera at The Juilliard School in New York City. In 2003, James earned a Bachelor of Music in Voice.
After James was done with her college, she struggled to find work. She made her Broadway tribute in 2010 from the musical production of The Addams Family. She also appeared in Frank Wildhorn's Wonderland in 2011 as well as in the Broadway revival of Godspell. In the same year, she performed at the musical at the Circle in the Square Theatre. James took on the role of Teena Marie in Motown: The Musical in 2013.
As a solo artist, James moonlighted while on Broadway. She has played at several New York City clubs, including 54 Below, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Rockwood Music Hall, and Birdland. Morgan James Live: A Celebration of Nina Simone was the first solo album by James, which was recorded at the New York jazz club, Dizzy's, and released in 2012. Some of her discographies are Hunter, Reckless Abandon, Memphis Magnetic, Blue, along with a few singles.
