Mike Flanigin, also known as ‘The Drifter,’ is an American musician from Denton, Texas. He is now known as one of the brightest stars of the Texas Blues scene. His music is defined as blues, and he is praised for masterfully playing the Hammond B3 organ. He is more famous for his organ trio work, both with Texas guitar legends Billy Gibbons and Jimmie Vaughan, along with his own.
Flanigin has shared the stage with big names such as Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, ZZ Top, Steve Miller, and Charlie Sexton. He has rocked many venues, from dance halls and beer joints all across Texas to Royal Albert Hall, the LA Forum, and Madison Square Garden. He has been a significant part of the Austin Blues scene since the early ’90s.
Flanigin toured as a guitarist with Los Angeles-based The Red Devils in 1991. He also worked in the Antone’s Nightclub house band and backing up many of the original blues legends. It was during this time when he switched his career from guitar to the Hammond B3 organ. Flanigin founded a trio in 2009 with Jimmie Vaughan, which continues to this day.
Mike Flanigin’s first-ever solo album entitled The Drifter was called a singular vision by Rolling Stone Magazine. The latest album by Flanigin is West Texas Blues, which was released in 2020.
