Michael W. Smith Information
Michael Whitaker Smith (October 7, 1957) is an American musician. He was born in Kenova, West Virginia. He started abusing drugs and alcohol after finishing high school. He spent one semester honing his songwriting abilities at Marshall University before dropping out. In the Huntington, West Virginia, area, he was also a member of several bands.
Nashville is known as the mecca of country music, and his friend Shane Keister, a session musician at the time, pushed him to make the trip and seek a music career there. Smith and Mike Nawrocki, co-creators of VeggieTales, released their new children's book series, Nurturing Steps, in May 2018. May 8 saw the release of the first book, Good Night and Nighty Night. Joining the book was his debut children's album, Lullaby.
Smith led a free event titled "Surrounded: A Night to Pray, Worship and Be Awakened" at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on August 30, 2018. Later this year, 175 countries throughout the globe were able to watch the event on TBN. Awaken: The Surrounded Experience, Smith's live worship CD, was released on February 22, 2019. Worship Forever, Smith's live worship CD, was released on the same date as his original album Worship—September 11, 2001—to mark the 20th anniversary of the tragic events 9/11.
