Michael Cavanaugh (1972) is an American musician, singer, and actor famous for playing the lead vocals and piano in the band for the Broadway Musical Movin’ Out. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and his parents purchased him a piano when he was seven years old.
As a musician, Cavanaugh played his debut full-time gig in Orlando, Florida, at a piano bar on an international drive called “Blazing Pianos.” He also got the opportunity in January 1999 to play at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. At the venue, he caught the attention of Billy Joel in February 2001.
Later on, Cavanaugh moved to New York City to start working with Twyla Tharp and Billy Joel. Together they shaped up the Broadway musical named “Movin’ Out.” Billy Joel handpicked him to appear in the musical. He appeared on the show for three years in a row doing over 1300 performances.
Cavanaugh had also played with the Florida Orchestra in 2012. He played a mix of contemporary and classical music by composers such as Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Elton John, and Billy Joel. In 2014, he became a part of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and performed in the Pops! Series for them in a program named ‘The Music of Billy Joel & More.”
