MegaCon Information
MegaCon, also known as Mega Convention, is a large American speculative fiction convention. It caters to the gaming communities, fantasy, anime, sci-fi, and comic book. The convention usually takes place in spring in Orlando, Florida, at Orange County Convention Center. The first comic book convention in the Orlando area, held every year from 1974 to 1994, was named OrlandoCon. Hal Foster, Floyd Gottfredson, and C. C. Beck were the regular guests of the convention.
MegaCon started in 1993 and was founded by James Breitbiel. It was acquired in 1999 by the published based in Tampa, CrossGen. MegaCon headquarters moved to Live Oak, Florida, from Safety Harbor in September 2008. The actual convention remained in Orlando. An announcement was made on April 7, 2015, that MegaCon had been sold to Informa. The group now operates the convention under its Fan Expo Group. They also run Fan Expo Boston, Fan Expo Dallas, and Fan Expo Canada.
MegaCon hosted its first live presentation of the Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards in 2007. The convention also announced that they would be hosting the first inaugural Project Fanboy Awards ceremony, awarding publishers, writers, authors with honors voted on by internet users.
Official guests who have appeared at MegaCon since 2010 include Peter Mayhew, Jeremy Bulloch, Claudia Wells, Stan Lee, William Shatner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Connor, Chuck Dixon, Paul Gulacy, Phil Hester, Tim Townsend, and William Tucci.
