Mdou Moctar Information
Mahamadou Souleymane (August 16, 1984) is a Taureg musician and songwriter. He is professionally known by his stage name, Mdou Moctar. His music is a blend of Tuareg guitar styles and current rock. A West African network that traded mobile phones and memory cards was the first to notice his music. His vocal repertoire includes the Tamasheq language.
The first full-band effort by Moctar was 2019's Ilana: The Creator, their fourth studio album. He is skilled in both takamba and assouf guitar styles. Ilana (The Creator), Moctar's sixth studio album and debut album featuring a full band, was released in 2019. "Perhaps the most fiery psych-rock of the 21st century," said NPR's Bob Boilen, and "serious music for a serious cause" was the label given by Happy Mag, which ranked the album thirteenth on their list of "The 25 best psychedelic rock albums of the 2010s."
Matador Records released Afrique Victime, Moctar's sixth studio album, on May 21, 2021. International magazines such as The Guardian, Paste, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork gave the album good reviews. His seventh studio album, the highly acclaimed Funeral for Justice, was released on May 3, 2024.
