Maxim Vengerov Information
Maxim Alexandrovich Vengerov (August 20, 1974) is a Russian-born Israeli conductor, violist, and violinist. Vengerov was born in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. Since he was three, he sang in his mother's choir. At five, he began violin lessons with Galina Turchaninova, a well-known violin teacher.
Vengerov won the 1984 International Karol Lipiski and Henryk Wieniawski Young Violin Player Competition at ten. He recorded on Melodiya, Russia's biggest record label, on LP stereo. He recorded again on LP, but this time digitally, at the age of 11 as part of the Tchaikovsky Competition opening concert. After that, he moved to London and recorded his first CD for Biddulph Records.
When Vengerov was 16 years old, he relocated to Israel with his parents and grandmother. Vengerov went to the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance to study further. Israel "is in my genes," he stated, adding that his "heart and soul belong to Israel." He visits Israel anytime there is a war there, saying: "With my firearm in my violin and bow, I feel like a soldier. This is a practice passed down from my forefathers - Isaac Stern used to do the same thing."
In 2006, Vengerov launched Musicians of Tomorrow, a music school in northern Israel headed by a former Israel Philharmonic first violinist. He lives near Lake Kinneret in Migdal, Israel. He's also performed at several Holocaust memorial events.
