Matthias Goerne Information
Matthias Goerne (March 31, 1967) is a German baritone. He was born in Weimar, Germany. He began his musical career on the cello before moving on to the voice. He decided to pursue a music career when he was nine years old. Several of his father's plays featured him in the children's choir, including Carmen and La Bohème.
He had voice lessons from Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig when he was 18 to 22. In retrospect, he credits Beyer as his most formative instructor and the person responsible for his initial success in competition. In 1989, he took first place in the Salomon-Lindberg Competition and second place at the Hugo Wolf Competition. He took first place in a West Berlin singing competition two years into his education.
His idol and the finest artist Goerne knew was Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and the head of the jury, composer and pianist Aribert Reimann introduced them. He was scheduled to study with Fischer-Dieskau for a whole three years. Then, for the next two and a half to three years, he was Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's student. After being summoned by Kurt Masur to sing in the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig in 1990, Goerne made his professional debut that same year. In 1997 (Papageno), Goerne debuted at the Salzburg Festival.
