Matt Gartska Information
Matthew Wolfgang Garstka (April 27, 1989) is an American drummer who is most known for his work with the instrumental progressive metal band Animals as Leaders. Garstka grew up in Westfield, Massachusetts, but he was born to renowned guitarist Greg Garstka in Hopewell, Virginia. When he was eight years old, he began to play the drums. His father took him on gigs when he was 12, performing rock, blues, and reggae.
Jo Sallins exposed Garstka to fusion, funk, Latin, and jazz when he was fourteen. As a fourteen-year-old, Matt appeared in Sallins' DVD, Mr. Cool. Heavy Volume, his debut solo album, was released in 2007, including Joel Stroetzel of Killswitch Engage, Chis Regan of FNB, and Jo Sallins. In 2006, he collaborated with punk band Backstab on an EP. Garstka enrolled at Berklee College of Music immediately following his high school graduation. He was also included in GospelChops.com's Shed Sessions Vol. 3 that same year.
Garstka replaced Navene Koperweis as band leader in Tosin Abasi's Animals shortly after relocating to Los Angeles. For Mestis's 2012 debut EP Basal Ganglia, Garstka programmed the drums. Modern Drummer magazine featured Garstka on its cover in March 2015. Garstka has shared the stage alongside Derek Jordon, Evan Marien, Doug Johns, Tony Smith, David Stolz, Rohn Lawrence, and Doug Johns. He was named MusicRadar's "Best Progressive Drummer'' in 2021.
