Marvin Sapp Information
Bishop Marvin Louis Sapp Sr. (January 28, 1967) is an American Gospel music singer and songwriter. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At the age of four, Sapp started singing in church. He sang in a variety of Gospel groups and ensembles throughout his adolescence. In Indianapolis, Indiana, he was a student at the unaccredited Aenon Bible College. After gospel musician Fred Hammond persuaded him to sing with Commissioned after Keith Staten left in 1990, he dropped out of Aenon. Number 7, Matters of the Heart, and Irreplaceable Love all feature Sapp. Marcus R. Cole took over after Sapp retired in 1996.
Sapp opted to pursue a career as a contemporary gospel solo musician in 1996 and has since released seven albums. With the release of "Never Would Have Made It" from the album Thirsty in 2007, Sapp became a crossover sensation, reaching number 14 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list, number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart in the United States. Thirsty opened at number 28 on the Billboard 200, one on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums, and four on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after selling over 500,000 copies, making it Sapp's best-selling solo album. It has since sold over 712,000 copies. Sapp won all seven Gospel Stellar Awards, for which he was nominated in 2009.
