Maine Black Bears Mens Hockey Information
The Maine Black Bears men's ice hockey team is a (NCAA) Division I collegiate hockey squad representing the University of Maine. One of Hockey East's divisions is the Black Bears. Harold Alfond Sports Arena, often referred to as Alfond Arena, is located in Orono, Maine, and is the site of home games. With a 28-18 record in NCAA Tournament play and a pair of titles (1993 and 1999), the Black Bears have been to 11 Frozen Fours.
Under Red Gendron, the program has persisted in its struggles; the Black Bears have only managed two winning seasons since 2012, and their worst season since 1982 (a dismal 8-24-6) in 2014–15 landed them dead last in Hockey East. Jay Leach announced his departure from the program in April 2017. As associate head coach, Coach Guite took his position.
The 2020 NCAA hockey season was canceled on March 12th due to the pandemic. Gendron was named Hockey East Coach of the Year, while Swayman was named Player of the Year. Swayman also became the first Black Bear to win the Mike Richter Award as the best goalkeeper in the country. Gendron had a medical emergency while playing golf, and he passed away shortly after the 2020–21 season ended in Maine.
