Bill Sorensen and the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation of Medora, North Dakota, a transcontinental rail line hamlet established in 1883, give the most comprehensive performance of traditional Christmas tunes. A town that Tuco and the Man with No Name would ride through, Medora has maintained its hardy frontier roots to this day. In honor of Teddy Roosevelt's unit in the Spanish-American War, they are the location of the storied Rough Riders Hotel. The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame is one of several additional historic sites in the town. Their most famous performance is the Medora Musical, an Old Western show that regularly draws over 110,000 spectators.
The nostalgic, rural entertainment of The Medora Musical has been such a sensation that the local artists are touring with their production. A Magical Medora Christmas, a traveling group of gifted entertainers this holiday season, will visit Mandan High School on December 2 and Belle Mehus Auditorium on December 19. They will play classic Christmas songs and family-friendly comedies.
Bill Sorensen, a longtime performer and former mayor of Bismarck, founded the production. In 2016, he recovered from throat cancer to begin emceeing his labor of passion, the Medora Musical. Bill does some magic tricks, provides historical background for the musical selections, and ensures that the evening stays faithful to Medora's 54 years of wholesome Western productions.
