Scotswoman Maeve Gilchrist is a talented composer and harpist. Gilchrist's Scottish father and Irish mother were musicians and frequently had music sessions in their homes. Thus she spent her childhood in Edinburgh surrounded by folk music. The Irish Times referred to Gilchrist in 2019 as "the essence of a new generation of daring harpers, pushing the boundaries of her chosen instrument so that it feels both ancient and thoroughly contemporary."
According to Gilchrist, "I want to turn those stereotypes on their heads." She's written pieces for symphony and harp orchestras. She has worked as a professor and a guest performer at her alma college, Berklee. She has collaborated on albums with acts like My Brightest Diamond and The Furies and performed live as a duo with Sam Amidon. She has worked alongside such notable musicians as Yo-Yo Ma, Esperanza Spalding, and the Brooklyn Rider String Quartet.
Gilchrist and percussive dancer Nic Gareiss have collaborated onstage, and the two musicians are also part of a quartet with cello Natalie Haas and guitarist Yann Falquet under the moniker DuoDuo. Gilchrist played harp on the 2020 album Yeo-Neun by cellist Okkyung Lee, which also featured Lee as the quartet's leader and pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Elvynd Opsvik.
