Mads Tolling Information
Mads Tolling (July 5, 1980) is a Danish-American composer, violist, and violinist. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Tolling has led his projects and bands since leaving the Turtle Island Quartet and bassist Stanley Clarke's band. As a member of Turtle Island Quartet, his work on the albums 4+Four (2006) and A Love Supreme - The Legacy of John Coltrane earned him a Grammy for Best Classical Crossover Album (2008). In the studio, he laid down some tracks for Stanley Clarke's The Toys of Men (2007).
After finishing school, he was awarded the Sankt Annae's Award for Musical Excellence in Denmark and fellowships from the Queen Margrethe Foundation, the Sonning Foundation, and the Berklee Elvin Jones Foundation. Since graduating from Berklee College of Music, he has been on the road with the Stanley Clarke ensemble and the Turtle Island Quartet. Along with Al Di Meola, Kenny Barron, Paquito D'Rivera, and Leo Kottke, he has shared the stage with them.
In 2015, Tolling's album Mike Marshall & The Turtle Island Quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Classical Compendium Category. A member of the violin section of the 2016 DownBeat Critics Poll All-Star Team, he won the Rising Star Violin Award. Tolling has released five albums as a bandleader, two of which feature just him and yours myself (Mads Tolling & The Mads Men and the Mads Tolling Quartet).
