McBriare Samuel Lanyon “Mac” DeMarco (April 30, 1990) is a Canadian producer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Duncan, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island and went to McKernan School. At that time, he had already begun playing guitar, learning from his grandmother. He had joined several bands during his high schools, such as The Meat Cleavers (an indie rock band), Outdoor Miners (post-punk band), and The Sound of Love (alternative R&B group). DeMarco completed his graduation from Strathcona High School in 2008.
Mac DeMarco became well-known in 2012 when he released his first full-length album, 2. That album had a laid-back, dreamy sound that made people pay attention. One of the songs, “Ode to Viceroy,” became a fan favorite.
His music mixes rock, pop, and soft sounds with a fun and chill vibe. He plays most of the instruments himself and records his songs very simply. His voice is calm, and his guitar playing feels relaxed, like something you’d hear on a lazy afternoon. DeMarco quickly became popular with people who liked indie music and wanted something different from the usual loud rock.
Over the years, he toured worldwide and played at big music festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury. He kept making personal and mellow music, with albums like This Old Dog in 2017 and Here Comes the Cowboy in 2019. DeMarco has worked with other artists too, including Tyler, the Creator and HOMESHAKE. Fans love his music but also like his funny and easygoing personality.
In 2025, DeMarco is hitting the road again. He’s playing a set of special shows called the “Five Easy Hot Dogs Live” tour. These concerts are based on his 2023 instrumental album Five Easy Hot Dogs, but now he’s bringing those songs to life on stage.
