Ludwig Wicki, the conductor, explores various musical styles and forms. As the Hofkirche's music director in Lucerne, he fostered a holy canon that included everything from Gregorian chant to modern compositions, with a focus on the works of classical composers like Haydn, J.S. Bach, and the Renaissance masters like Palestrina, Monteverdi, and Schütz. He has also led concerts of late Romantic and Impressionist music, performances of Viennese classics, and chamber group performances of Stravinsky, Schönberg, and contemporary music.
Wicki established the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra in 1999 with the express purpose of playing film scores. Throughout each season, the symphony collaborates with several well-known film composers, such as Howard Shore, Randy Newman, James Horner, Martin Böttcher, George Fenton, and Michel Giacchino, on over ten film music projects.
Ludwig Wicki led the 21st Century Orchestra & Chorus in the world premiere of The Fellowship of the Ring 2008 at the KKL Luzern. The London Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival, and his own 21st Century Symphony Orchestra at Radio City Music Hall are just some of the groups he has led in performances of the piece since then.
