Lucy Kaplansky Information
Her father, the famous mathematician Irving Kaplansky, was a Chicago native, and Kaplansky herself grew up there (1917–2006). Later in life, she occasionally performed, singing songs on mathematics written by her father, a skilled pianist. Instead of attending university, she relocated to New York at eighteen. She quickly became a member of the city's folk music scene, hanging out in Greenwich Village with Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, and Richard Shindell.
After deciding in 1983 to study psychology, she enrolled at Yeshiva. She kept up her musical career alongside her Ph.D. studies, and she and Colvin even found some success as a pair. Kaplansky turned down record label offers once they became popular and became a staff psychologist at a New York hospital, where he currently works as a private practitioner. She put in long hours on this project for several years and gave few performances. She continued to work as a session musician, providing Suzanne Vega with studio-recorded backup vocals.
In the early 1990s, she felt a strong pull to return to music. Colvin, who was beginning to find fame in the music industry then, volunteered to produce an album for her. The result was her 1994 album The Tide for Red House Records, which featured both her music and several cover versions—the time had come for her to return to music full-time after dabbling with psychology. Further albums have since been released.
