The LPO has its headquarters in New Orleans and services throughout the Gulf South. The L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) is the oldest continuously performing professional orchestra in the United States that its musicians run. After the dissolution of the New Orleans Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra in September 1991, its members formed the LPO; however, music director Maxim Shostakovich did not remain in his position.
Klauspeter Seibel (1936-2011) served as the LPO's first music director from its inception in 1985 until his retirement in 2005. His death on January 8, 2011, in Hamburg, Germany, was met with widespread admiration, and eulogies lauded his contributions. The LPO had to disband when Hurricane Katrina hit in August of 2005. The Orpheum Theatre, where they performed, was ruined by the water. In 2006, the orchestra began holding concerts in several venues. Palmer Park was one of those places.
