Louis Hayes Information
Louis Hayes (May 31, 1937) is an American band leader and jazz drummer. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. Around the time he turned 10, Hayes got his hands on a drum set. His cousin Clarence Stamps, a talented drummer, profoundly impacted his early development. His advice and guidance helped him establish a solid foundation in his craft. He says that hearing jazz on the radio, especially from big bands, had an early impact on him.
Philly Joe Jones was a major inspiration for him, and Jo Jones served as his mentor. In the jazz world, he was most closely connected to Horace Silver's Quintet (1956–1959), the Cannonball Adderley Quintet (1959–1965), and the Oscar Peterson Trio (1965–67). Hayes frequently played alongside Sam Jones, whether with Adderley and Peterson or on his own. Before he turned 16, he was already leading a band in Detroit nightclubs. From 1955 to 1956, he collaborated with Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller.
In August 1956, he came to New York to replace Art Taylor in the Horace Silver Quintet. In 1959, he joined the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, where he stayed until midway through 1965, when he replaced Ed Thigpen in the Oscar Peterson Trio. After breaking up with Peterson in 1967, he created several groups that he either led solo or with others. Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron, and James Spaulding were among his sidemen.
