Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Information
American musicians have formed the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) in Southern California—the Alex Theatre in Glendale and Royce Hall at UCLA host LACO's Orchestral Series concerts. Cellist James Arkatov founded the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) in 1968 to provide a creative outlet for musicians working in the area's film and recording facilities by performing classical music repertoire at a chamber orchestra scale of roughly 40-45 performers.
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) started as something other than a resident of any particular venue. Mark Taper Forum, Thorne Hall at Occidental College, the California Institute of Technology, and the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, are just a few places where the orchestra has played in the past (Beckman Auditorium). Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) currently presents "In Focus," a chamber music and discussion series, in Santa Monica at the Moss Theatre and San Marino at The Huntington, in addition to its Orchestral Series concerts at Alex Theatre and Royce Hall.
The patron commissioning club, Sound Investment, has commissioned new works for the orchestra to perform. Former music director Neville Marriner modeled LACO after the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. The second Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra music director, Gerard Schwarz, broadened the ensemble's focus to include additional pieces by American composers. Iona Brown started as the music advisor for LACO in 1986–1987 and became the music director in 1987–1988, a position she held until 1992. From 1992 until 1995, Christof Perick served as the Music Director of the LACO.
