Loreena McKennitt Information
Loreena McKennitt (February 17, 1957) is a Canadian composer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. She was born in Morden, Manitoba. McKennitt decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, so she enrolled at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. She had just heard of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, or Gordon Lightfoot when she moved to Winnipeg and immersed herself in Canadian folk music. McKennitt's interest in Celtic music began after she performed at the first Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1974. This led her to a trip to Ireland.
McKennitt participated in the "The American Christmas Carol" concert at Carnegie Hall on November 30, 2012, alongside Tim Janis, Sarah McLachlan, Andrea Corr, Hayley Westenra, the Sleepy Man Banjo Boys, Dawn Kenney, Jana Mashonee, Amy Petty, and a choir. On May 11, 2018, McKennitt released Lost Souls, her tenth studio album. She had intended to go on tour in 2018 and 2019 to promote the album.
In the 2018 film Road to the Lemon Grove, she played God's voice in a minor role. Released in 2019, Live at the Royal Albert Hall was recorded by McKennitt in London earlier that year. Although McKennitt's work combines aspects and characteristics of music from around the globe and is often classed as folk music in record stores, it has generally been categorized as World or Celtic music.
