London Symphony Orchestra Information
British in origin, the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is situated in London. The LSO is the oldest of London's symphony orchestras, having formed in 1904. Some Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Orchestra members formed the London Symphony Orchestra in response to a policy change that mandated they provide their exclusive services to the ensemble. Subsequently, the LSO instituted a similar requirement for its participants. The LSO was set up from the beginning as a cooperative, with all members sharing in the financial rewards at the end of the year. For the first forty years, this practice was followed by the orchestra.
During the 1930s and 1950s, the LSO was overshadowed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, then the Philharmonia and the Royal Philharmonic after World War II, respectively, because of their reputations as superior ensembles in London. After WWII, organizations were required to forego the profit-sharing premise to qualify for public funding for the first time.
Many veteran musicians departed the orchestra in the 1950s when the majority voted against focusing on film work at the expense of symphony concerts. The LSO regained its preeminent status during the 1960s and has kept it ever since. In 1966, the LSO founded the LSO Chorus, a group of professional and amateur singers performing with the orchestra in choral compositions.
