Loggins & Messina Information
In the first half of the 1970s, no other pop/rock combination was as popular as Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina. Staff songwriter Loggins caught the attention of record producer and ex-Buffalo Springfield/Poco member Messina after a string of hits with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Messina agreed to produce Loggins's debut album, but the project soon evolved into a collaboration between the two musicians, resulting in 1972's Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin' In. The album became gold and remained top for over two years.
Loggins & Messina spent the next four years releasing a string of platinum and gold albums; all charted in the top ten. They all had an upbeat country-rock vibe, executed by a tight band. The classic rock single "Your Mama Don't Dance" was performed by Loggins & Messina in 1972. Three of their albums, Full Sail (1973), On Stage (1974), and Mother Lode (1974), charted in the top ten—the album So Fine featured cover versions of songs first released in the 1950s.
The end of that year marked the beginning of Loggins' and Messina's separate solo careers; their early discography was rounded up by a greatest hits album, Best of Friends, and a live record, Finale. In 2005, the team got back together and went on a summer tour supporting their greatest hits album, The Best: Sittin' in Again.
