Lip Sync Battle is one of the hits American musical reality competition television series. It premiered on April 2, 2015, on Spike, which was later popular as Paramount Network. The competition was created by John Krasinski and Stephen Merchant, whereas directed and presented by Beth McCarthy-Miller and LL Cool J along with Chrissy Teigen, respectively. Lip Sync Battle is based on a unique idea; celebrities battle each other with lip sync performances. This idea was initially a recurring segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, but later it developed into a separate show.
The premiere episode of the Lip Sync Battle is the highest-rated premiere in Spike's history. This show ended up being a hit show for the network, and the success of this competition has led to the creation of various international adaptations. The game pits two celebrities against each other in a lip-syncing battle for two rounds. A crowd is present to determine the winner of the competition.
Whoever wins, he or she is presented with a Lip Sync Battle belt, which is reminiscent of the WCW Television Championship title belt.
Merchant, Krasinski, and Fallon pitched the show in 2014, to NBC but the network passed on the show. NBC's cable channels USA Network and Bravo also did the same, but the series eventually got picked-up by Spike cable channel. The show has five seasons premiered to date. It received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in the category of the Outstanding Structured Reality Program in July 2016.
