Leo Kottke Information
Leo Kottke (September 11, 1945) is an American acoustic guitarist born in Athens, Georgia. He grew up listening to folk and delta blues in Muskogee, Oklahoma, particularly Mississippi John Hurt's songs. Before taking up a guitar and creating his unique, unusual style, Kottke honed his skills in the trombone and violin. Kottke was a part of the Delta Upsilon fraternity during his two semesters at the University of Missouri.
Phish bassist Mike Gordon and guitarist Mike Kottke worked together on the 2002 album Clone, which featured vocals and instrumentals from both artists. Phish was on a long break at the time. In 2005, the duo released Sixty Six Steps, their second studio album. To promote both albums, the duo went on tour.
Noon, a new album by Kottke and Gordon, was previewed in August 2020 and published on Megaplum/ATO Records. Kottke hadn't released a studio album since 2005, and this was their first joint effort since Sixty Six Steps. While Kottke did a lot of open tuning early in his career, he now uses more conventional settings, but he still frequently tunes his guitars two whole steps below normal.
