Lauren Anderson Information
Lauren Anderson (February 19, 1965) is a ballet dancer and a former principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. She is from Houston, Texas, and was the only child of Lawrence Anderson and Doris Parker-Morales. She was trained at Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy from seven years old. Anderson graduated from Lamar High School in 1982 and joined the Houston Ballet in 1983. In 1990, she became a principal dancer and was the second African-American female ballet dancer to be promoted to principal dancer at one of the major American ballet companies.
Anderson earned international recognition through her performance of the title role in Cleopatra. She has also performed works by Sir Kenneth MacMillan and George Balanchine, along with many others. She was the only African-American prima ballerina, anywhere in the world, at the head of a major ballet company. In 2006, Anderson retired from performing, and the next year she became an outreach associate in the Houston Ballet’s department of education. She currently works as a ballet teacher at Houston Ballet’s academy and conducts master classes at schools (Houston area). Anderson is one of the most in-demand lecturers on the subject of ballet.
