Larry Gatlin Information
Larry Wayne Gatlin is an American Southern gospel and country actor, singer, and songwriter from Seminole, Texas. Since childhood, he and his brothers, Steve, Gatlin, and Rudy, have performed together. They often sang in their local church with their sister, LaDonna, as kids. The siblings also used to perform on local radio stations, occasionally on television shows, and recorded a Gospel music album for the Gospel label Sword and Shield. Gatlin, along with his brothers, was able to beat out the legendary Roy Orbison in a local talent contest. During all this, Gatlin was also a quarterback at Odessa High School in 1964.
After Gatlin graduated, he chose to attend the University of Houston. Later on, he auditioned for and joined the Gospel music group known as The Imperials. The group went on to perform in Las Vegas, Nevada at Jimmy Dean's Las Vegas Revue, in January 1971.
As a solo artist, Gatlin found work in Nashville as a background singer for Kris Kristofferson, with the help of country singer Dottie West. He released his first studio album entitled The Pilgrim in 1973. "Sweet Becky Walker" and "Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall" were two singles released from the album. Some of his other notable albums are Rain / Rainbow, Larry Gatlin with Family and Friends, Love Is Just a Game, Oh Brother, and compilation albums, Larry Gatlin's Greatest Hits, Greatest Hits, Greatest Hits Vol. II, 17 Greatest Hits, and 16 Biggest Hits.
