Lakecia Benjamin is an American R&B, jazz, and funk saxophonist. She was born in New York City. She was a student at New York City's Eleanor Roosevelt Junior High. At the tender age of thirteen, she began penning her first songs. In primary school, she started to play the saxophone.
At Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, she later developed a passion for jazz. New York City's The New School was her next stop after high school. She got her start playing Latin dance music. Salsa and merengue were her instruments.
Early on, she had the guidance of saxophonist Gary Bartz, who taught her the 25 Daily Etudes by Hyacinthe Klosé and other technical workout methods. It was he who first exposed her to the jazz of Jackie McLean, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane. She was a Jimmy Chambers, Billy Harper, Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, and Gary Bartz student at New School University.
Benjamin got his start in the industry as a trumpet player with the band Young Titans of Jazz, which he co-founded with Clark Terry. Corte Ellis, Kool & the Gang, Macy Gray, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, Bertha Hope, Ulysses Owens Jr., and Count Basie Orchestra are among the numerous groups that have included her music. Other notable collaborators include Anita Baker, Harry Belafonte, Blitz the Ambassador, Joanne Brackeen, Keyshia Cole, Duke Ellington Orchestra, and many more.
