Alexandre Dumas Fils wrote a book called The Lady of the Camellias, which is also known as Camille in English. The play debuted at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in Paris, France, on February 2, 1852. It had previously been published in 1848 and was reworked for the stage by Dumas. Everyone loved it right away. Not long after that, in 1853, the opera La Traviata was composed by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, reimagining the story's female protagonist, Marguerite Gautier, as Violetta Valéry.
Originally composed for prima ballerina Marcia Haydée of the Stuttgart Ballet, John Neumeier's Lady of the Camellias has music by Frédéric Chopin. The 1978 debut took place at Stuttgart's Staatstheater. Camille, "a travesty on La Dame aux Camellias by Charles Ludlam, staged first by his own Ridiculous Theatrical Company in 1973, with Ludlam playing the lead in drag," was one of numerous adaptations, spin-offs, and parodies.
