Kraak and Smaak Information
A musical production group from Leiden, Netherlands, is called Kraak & Smaak. The project's inaugural 12" singles were issued by UK label Jalapeno Records in 2003. Following inquiries from Annie Nightingale and Pete Tong, a DJ guest mix was recorded for BBC Radio 1 and received rotation. Following were other remixes for UK musicians like Mark Rae and DJ tours around the US and Australia. Boogie Angst, their debut album, was released in the UK in 2006.
The title tune of Plastic People, their second studio album, was written by featured UK musician Bobby Nio and Mark Brydon of the electro band Moloko. The album's lead song, "Squeeze Me," with UK vocalist Ben Westbeech, was a small hit that peaked at number six on the Dutch pop charts and had extensive international airplay. With its "flip book" motif, the Dutch director Andre Maat's video garnered acclaim from US celebrity blogger Perez Hilton and rap artist/producer Kanye West. It also won several prizes.
Along with artists like The Ting Tings and Adele, the initiative won the EU-sponsored European Border Breakers Award (EBBA) in January 2009. The prize was given at the Groningen (city) Eurosonic event during a Jools Holland-hosted television program. Chrome Waves, their fourth album from Kraak & Smaak, was released in 2013; Chrome Waves Remixed followed in 2014.
