Korine Information
Harmony Korine (January 4, 1973) is an American author, artist, photographer, actor, and filmmaker. Korine encountered photographer Larry Clark while roller skating with friends in Washington Square Park. The photographer was so taken with his work that he requested him to write a script about skaters that incorporated a young person's struggle with AIDS. The director informed Clark, "I've been waiting all my life to write this story." Korine penned the screenplay for Kids in just three weeks, a film about a day in the sex and drug-filled lives of several teens in Manhattan during the AIDS crisis.
Kids opened to mixed reviews in 1995 but have since gained considerable cult status. Actresses Chlo Sevigny and Rosario Dawson, among others, make their big-screen debuts in this picture. Despite its negative reception, the picture proved to be a breakthrough for Korine. The result was a meeting with film executive Cary Woods, who agreed to finance Korine's pet project Gummo at about $1 million. Gummo, a film by Harmony Korine that was released in 1997, was inspired by the experiences of residents of Xenia, Ohio. This community was leveled by a tornado in the early 1970s.
Instead of following a traditional plot, Korine has written a collection of sketches called Gummo. Most actors were hired in Tennessee before principal photography began, and only five were professional actors. The film's dreamlike soundtrack contributes to its unsettling ambiance, and its unsettling, often bizarre scenes make it stand out. Various musical genres are represented, from death metal to Madonna and Roy Orbison.
