Kevin Morby Information
Kevin Robert Morby, born April 2, 1988, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born in Lubbock, Texas. At the age of ten, Morby began studying instruments. He started the band Creepy Aliens when he was just an adolescent. Morby left Blue Valley Northwest High School at 17, earned his General Equivalency Diploma, and then relocated from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, where he supported himself by working as a bike delivery boy and at a café. Later, he started playing bass for the noise-folk outfit Woods.
Before relocating to Los Angeles, Morby made a tribute album to New York with Babies producer Rob Barbato. Morby made his solo début with the 2013 release of Harlem River on Woodsist Records. The album features eight tracks. Will Canzoneri, Tim Presley (White Fence), Dan Iead, and Cate Le Bon contribute to the record, and drummer Justin Sullivan (The Babies) is also included.
Beautiful Strangers, a protest song written by Morby in 2016, was inspired by the attacks in Paris in 2015, the mass murder in Orlando in 2016, and the death of Freddie Gray. As a result of its popularity at their live shows, the song was released as a digital single in October 2016, with all profits going to Everytown for Gun Safety. According to Meg Duffy, Morby's guitarist, "We all worked on the next record together, pretty collaboratively in terms of arranging and playing" (Morby's fourth studio album).
