Kevin Daniel, an Americana singer now located in Brooklyn and originally from North Carolina, wants to turn New York City into a mecca for country music. The singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist takes his brand of southern rock/gospel/blues to the dive bars of Brooklyn and beyond. A life-altering phone call came to Daniel in the dead of winter of 2013 as he was at a dinner party in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with several friends. His mother and stepfather, both adventurers and amateur pilots were killed when their plane went down on the way back from their mountain cabin in western North Carolina.
Everything changed for Daniel: his life was upended, his family was torn apart, and the planet itself was altered irrevocably. While back in North Carolina to assist with the family business, Daniel revisited his parents' lives through photographs, essays, and family anecdotes, inspiring him to pen more than a dozen songs that both mourned their loss and lauded the big lives for which they were known. Six were selected for the album, and one was composed especially for the memorial service for Daniel's parents.
Those sessions yielded FLY, Kevin Daniel's first extended play. The six-song effort, recorded in Brooklyn in 2014, captures Daniel's raw feelings during unimaginable suffering. Authentic life and the joy of living were reflected in the music's rock riffs and pop lyrics, set against a backdrop of southern sounds like banjo and country-loving three-part harmonies.
