Kathy Mattea Information
Kathleen Alice Mattea (June 21, 1959) is an American bluegrass and country music singer from South Charleston, West Virginia. She grew up in Cross Lanes and sang in her parents' church as a child. Mattea used to perform in high school and family gatherings initially. Later in 1976, she went to West Virginia University and joined a bluegrass band. Two years later, she dropped out of school and relocated to Nashville. Mattea worked as a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame, a waitress, and a secretary to support herself.
In 1983, Mattea was signed to Mercury Records after Byron Hill (songwriter, singer, and record producer) discovered her. She released her self-titled debut in 1984. Four of its singles hit the Hot Country Songs charts: "Street Talk," "Someone Is Falling in Love," "You've Got a Soft Place to Fall," and "That's Easy for You to Say." A few of her other notable singles are "Eighteen Wheels, and a Dozen Roses," "Untold Stories," and "Where've You Been."
Mattea released 18 studio albums in total, including Walk the Way the Wind Blows (1986), Untasted Honey (1987), Willow in the Wind (1989), Time Passes By (1991), Lonesome Standard Time (1992), and Walking Away a Winner (1994). A Collection of Hits (1990) is the only compilation album by her that earned platinum certification. Mattea has won four Academy of Country Music Awards, four Country Music Association Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several nominations.
