Katelyn Emerson Information
Following her acceptance into the MPhil/Ph.D. program at the Centre for Music and Science at the University of Cambridge, Katelyn Emerson splits her time between the United States and the United Kingdom. She is supported financially by a Bursary from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and a Studentship from the Economic and Social Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership (ESRC DTP).
Emerson earned her Master of Arts in organ from the Musikhochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart, Germany, with the help of a German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD). She then went on to study en perfectionnement at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse in France with Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen, courtesy of a Fulbright Study/Research Grant.
She graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory with degrees in organ performance, French studies, and music history/historical performance (fortepiano) (Ohio, USA). As a student at Oberlin, she was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda, the nation's preeminent music honor organization. She also taught music theory at the Oberlin Community Music School and was awarded the Selby Harlan Houston prize for outstanding organ and music theory achievement.
Emerson began studying organs in 2005 with the help of a scholarship from the Young Organist Collaborative (Portsmouth, New Hampshire). Since then, she has studied with Ludger Lohmann, Olivier Latry, Hans-Ola Ericsson, James David Christie, Marie-Louise Langlais, Ray Cornils, and Abbey Hallberg-Sieg.
Also, she has taken lessons in organ improvisation from Jeffrey Brillhart, Marie-Louise Langlais, and Bálint Karosi, piano lessons from Arlene Kies, fortepiano lessons from David Breitman and Yasuko Uyama-Bouvard, harpsichord and continuo lessons from Webb Wiggins, flute lessons from Trisha Craig, and voice lessons from Ellen Hargis.
