Kate DiCamillo Information
Katrina Elizabeth DiCamillo (March 25, 1964) is an American children’s fiction author. DiCamillo was born in Philadelphia and moved to Clermont, Florida, as a child. She graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville with a bachelor’s degree in English. She worked entry-level jobs in Clermont for several years before relocating to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1994. DiCamillo worked at a book warehouse in Minnesota and tried to get a novel published. Because of Winn-Dixie was her first book to be accepted for publication, and it was a critical and economic triumph. DiCamillo then quit work to pursue her dream of being a full-time author.
Because Winn-Dixie, The Tiger Rising, The Tale of Despereaux, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, The Magician’s Elephant, the Mercy Watson trilogy, and Flora & Ulysses are among her 25 works. Around 37 million copies of her books have been sold. Four have been made into films, while two have been turned into musicals. Her books have garnered numerous honors, including the Newbery Medal for The Tale of Despereaux and Flora & Ulysses, making DiCamillo one of just six authors to win two Newbery Medals.
DiCamillo served as the American National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature from 2014 to 2015. She is still writing and resides in Minneapolis. The Beatryce Prophecy, her most recent novel, was released in 2021.
