Karsu Information
Karsu Donmez (April 19, 1990) is a Turkish-Dutch singer. Her sound is a mashup of jazz, pop, and other styles. While saving for a car, her parents gifted her with a piano when she was seven. Even at 14, she gained notoriety as a singer thanks to her performances at her parent's restaurant. After appearing on Dutch television and performing at New York's Carnegie Hall, her career took off.
Live aan 't IJ, Karsu's debut studio album, was released in 2010. Her debut album, Confession, was released in October 2012 and was well-received by critics. Her 2015 album Colors features brighter and more carefree compositions than her earlier works. Karsu's album's name alludes to the fact that he has family in both Turkey and Amsterdam. She received the 2016 Edison Award for Colors from the Edison Foundation. In Athens, Greece, she established a music academy for asylum-seekers.
She also served as director for an organization providing aid to Amsterdam refugees. Director Mercedes Stalenhoef followed Karsu as she made her way from the kitchens of a restaurant to the stages of Carnegie Hall and beyond in her documentary about her life.
